How does an RCCB differ from a circuit breaker?

An RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker) & a circuit breaker are two distinct electrical devices that serve different purposes within an electrical system. While both are crucial components for ensuring safety, they vary in terms of functionality & the types of electrical faults they protect against.

A circuit breaker is primarily designed to protect electrical circuits from overloads and short circuits. It acts as a switch that automatically interrupts the flow of electricity if it detects an excessive current or a fault in the circuit. This helps prevent damage to the wiring and electrical appliances and mitigates the risk of fire hazards caused by excessive heat. Circuit breakers are commonly used in residential, commercial, and industrial applications to safeguard electrical systems.

On the other hand, an RCCB focuses on protecting against electrical leakages and ground faults. It detects and responds to the imbalance of electrical current between the live and neutral conductors. The current flowing via the live and neutral wires is balanced in normal conditions. However, when there is a leakage due to a fault or contact with an external source, such as a person or water, the RCCB senses the difference in current and trips, instantly cutting off the power supply. This rapid response helps prevent electric shocks and potential electrocution, making RCCBs crucial for ensuring personal safety.

Unlike circuit breakers, which mainly focus on detecting overcurrent and short circuits, RCCBs are specifically designed to detect residual currents, hence their name. They have a higher sensitivity to small current leakages, typically ranging from a few milliamperes to a few hundred milliamperes. This sensitivity protects RCCBs against electrical shocks even when the current may not be high enough to trigger a circuit breaker.

Why is it important to have both an RCCB and a circuit breaker in an electrical system?

It’s important to note that RCCBs and circuit breakers often work in conjunction with each other to provide comprehensive protection for electrical systems. While circuit breakers safeguard against overloads and short circuits, RCCBs complement their functionality by offering enhanced protection against electrical leakages and ground faults. Combining these devices significantly improves the overall electrical safety of a building or system.

In summary, an RCCB and a circuit breaker differ in their primary functions and the types of electrical faults they protect against. Both devices play vital roles in ensuring the safety of electrical systems and are commonly used in residential, commercial, and industrial applications.
